In Focus: The Battle for China’s Future Leadership
On 8 November the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China opens which will be the start of a once-in-a-decade transition in the highest leadership of the country.
Due to strict age limits, seven members out of the nine in the Politburo Standing Committee, the de facto highest and most powerful decision-making body in China, are expected to step down.
This includes President Hu Jintao, also head of the party, and Premier Wen Jiabao, who are expected to be replaced by Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang respectively.
Right after the closing of the congress the new leadership will be announced.
In spite of China becoming the second largest economy and an important global power, the traditional lack of transparency of China’s political system remains.
Johan Lagerkvist, Research Fellow at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, in his article “Slaget om Kinas framtida ledarskap” looks at the tradition of secrecy within the Chinese Communist Party, the struggle for power within the party and the challenges this poses for the new leadership.
