The White House 2018 budget proposal is expected to include cuts of up to 37 percent for spending on the State Department, the US Agency for International Development (USAID – svarer til Danida)), and other foreign assistance programs, including the UN, in next year’s budget.

The United States spends about 10 billion dollar (ca. 70 milliarder DKR) a year on the UN. It remains unclear whether the UN cuts will be phased in over the coming three years.

The Trump administration is considering cuts of up to 36 percent on humanitarian aid programs. On top of that up to one billion dollar in cuts in the UN peacekeeping budget. The US provides about 2.5 billion dollar per year to fund peacekeepers.

In Congress Democratic and Republican leaders have voiced concerns about imposing steep cuts in the State Department budget. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the president’s budget is “probably not” going to be passed, notes foreignpolicy.com.
