The United Nations Committee Against Torture has given the Ugandan government until June to submit its report on torture and human rights, the Washington Times reports.
Uganda faces suspension from the U.N. Convention Against Torture if it fails to comply, the Kampala Monitor said Wednesday.
The announcement was made by the Danish Ambassador to Uganda, Stig Barlyng, at a seminar in Entebbe. – Of 38 countries whose initial reports to the United Nations CAT are overdue, Uganda is unfortunately topping the list and its initial report was due on June 25, 1988, he said.
Barlyng said the process of writing the report and gathering relevant information increases awareness of the countrys obligations to prevent torture and rehabilitate victims of torture.
Ugandan Minister of State for International Affairs Tom Butime attributed Ugandas delay in submitting its report to poverty.
