NEW YORK, 23 APRIL 2009: As a result of the recent budget passed by the United States Congress, UNIFEM (FNs Kvindefond) will receive increased funding for 2009.

The US contribution to UNIFEM core resources will amount to 4,5 million US dollar, an increase of nearly one million from last year.

Also benefitting is the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women, administered by UNIFEM, which will receive 2,5 million dollar, an increase of more than 700.000 from 2008.

This higher level of funding demonstrates the support from the United States Government for UNIFEM’s work on the ground that advances programmes promoting gender equality, working to end violence against women and girls, and improving womens lives.

Even in the face of difficult financial times, the US, along with a number of other Governments, including Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Iceland, New Zealand and Sweden continue to underscore their commitment to women’s empowerment through increased funding for UNIFEM’s core resources.

These funds allow the organization to respond to growing demands in many parts of the world, such as the DR Congo, Haiti, Afghanistan and Iraq.
