Blog: Cambodias wheel of history rolls on

30 years has passed since the brutal Khmer Rouge regime of Cambodia was finally ended by invading Vietnamese troops in 1979.

Since taking power in 1975 the Khmer rouge had tried to recreate Cambodia, or Kampuchea, into an agrarian Utopia. It is estimated that up to 1,5 million people were killed by starvation, forced labor, torture and executions under their rule.

In February the UN-assisted tribunal under Cambodian jurisdiction to try the leaders of the former Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia for their crimes was finally started.

In this weeks “In Focus” blog on the Asiaportal Alexandra Kent, Senior Researcher at NIAS, comments on the tribunal.

We warmly welcome researchers, students, experts and others to comment on the article or to contact us on [email protected] if you are interested in participating with a blog article in future In Focus themes or maybe even in acting as theme editor for a series of articles on the blog.
