World Bank President Robert Zoellick said Tuesday the multilateral institution has stopped payments and new projects for Honduras.
– We have basically put a pause with our lending, Zoellick said before heading to Chile for a weekend meeting of Latin American finance ministers, where Sundays military ouster of President Manuel Zelaya will likely dominate discussion.
Roberto Micheletti, speaker of the Honduran Congress, has been installed as interim president.
The World Bank currently has 16 development projects in Honduras worth 400 million US dollar of which 130 million have already been disbursed (udbetalt). Besides the pending disbursements, the Bank planned to send Honduras 80 million dollar through its International Development Association (IDA) during the fiscal year beginning July 1st, 2009.
The President of the Inter-American Development Bank Luis Alberto Moreno also said on Wednesday that the lender would not be providing any new credits to Honduras after the recent coup there.
The finance minister of Honduras provisional government noted that the country stands to lose as much as 285 million dollar in international aid and loans through the end of the year due to the coup.
