Spain asked the World Bank on Tuesday to increase its loans to Latin America so that the region is not pushed to the background during the economic crisis.

President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero reiterated Spains commitment to maintain the flow of development aid and affirmed that one of the governments priorities is aid for Africa.

World Bank President Robert Zoellick emphasized the role Spain plays in granting economic aid to developing countries, in spite of Spains own financial difficulties.

The Iberian country plays an especially important role in World Bank programs relating to development and climatic change in Latin America and Africa. Zoellick reiterated the necessity to explore new forms of cooperation in these areas.
