Background

2015 is a critical year for progress on achieving social and economic development globally.

The Millennium Development Goals (2015 Målene) have reached their final year while a consensus on the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs = dagsorden 2030) has finally begun to emerge.

All eyes are now fixed on the crucial meeting to be held in Addis Ababa in July, the primary aim of which is to identify where the finances necessary for reducing poverty and building sustainable development through the SDGs are to come from.

The current level of financing for development will see an annual shortfall of 2.5 trillion US dollar (2,5 billioner DKR) if the SDGs are to be reached by 2030. (En billion er tusind milliarder).

Development aid will continue to be an essential part of the finance made available, particularly important for the world’s poor and poorest countries. Yet it is widely acknowledged that aid alone cannot carry the main responsibility for achieving the necessary progress.

The present private finance now flowing to developing countries will need to increase significantly. Local revenues for development from taxation and domestic investors will need to similarly increase.

Last but not least, the need for a major reform of the present policies governing international capital flows and the many ways that taxation of these financial flows is reduced or avoided must be addressed if adequate financing for development is to be available for the SDGs.

This seminar discusses the future of financing for development, and furthermore invites participants to a dialogue on Denmark’s priorities and role leading up to the important meeting in Addis Ababa.
