About the book

The book tells a story about encounters between prisons and NGOs, drawing attention to the variation in styles of intervention of three human rights NGOs that work to improve conditions for prisoners and prevent inhumane treatment.

The book shows how prisons act on NGOs as much as NGOs act on prisons.

This conclusion leads us to call for a re-alignment of rights-based approaches to prison reform that are more finely and pragmatically attuned to the reality of interdependent relations between prisons and NGOs.

Human Rights in Prisonsadvances the understanding of institutional agency by casting much needed empirical light on prisons, relations between staff and prisoners, and the inexorable grind of prison life.
