Background

The mining and oil/gas sectors have experienced a major boom during the past fifteen years. This boom was paralleled with a high level of scholarly and policy attention to the effects of resource wealth and dependence on developmental processes.

Starting with a retrospective overview of the ‘resource curse’ (svøbe) literature and policy initiatives, this presentation by Philippe Le Billon provides an initial assessment of the impacts of this boom, the resource governance initiatives on producing countries, and some of the lessons learned so far.

Philippe Le Billon is a geographer and professor at the Department of Geography, University of British Columbia, Canada. He has published extensively on natural resources, corruption and conflicts.
