Background

Is an ethical form of realist foreign policy possible?

President Obama sets out to conduct a cautiously realistic foreign policy that would also be influenced by moral values – not least by a humble and restrained approach to American power.

Unfortunately, a combination of the intractable issues which he has faced, an American foreign policy establishment addicted to (vant til) American unilateral hegemony and his own detached style of governing has meant that he has often fallen short of this goal.

With Professor Anatol Lieven – author of Ethical Realism and an influential observer of American foreign policy, not least in the Middle East – as our main speaker, this seminar takes stock of the Obama doctrine and also looks beyond the 2016 Presidential election.

Speakers

Anatol Lieven, Professor of international politics at Georgetown University, Qatar

Vibeke Schou Tjalve, Senior Researcher, International Security, DIIS
