Background

Peace interventions have undergone continual change and reassessment over the last twenty years, so much so that it is sometimes difficult to keep up with current thinking, with diverse frameworks for understanding goals, approaches and methods of building peace after conflicts.

Are peacebuilders meant to be exporting universal formats of ‘liberal’, democratic peace or should they be focusing on practices on the ground to empower more ‘bottom-up’, ‘organic’ and plural approaches? Is there any evidence that some approaches are better than others?

Should approaches be purely case-specific? What is the meaning of peacebuilding expertise in a complex world where it seems that context is key and ‘lessons learned’ can no longer be generalized?

Is peacebuilding itself still a viable framework or do approaches need to be more holistic rather than narrowly focused?

To analyse these changes, DIIS is bringing together a number of international experts discussing the directions in which peace interventions are going.
