TIME: Thursday, 12 April, 9.30 – 12.00

VENUE: Danish Institute for International Studies, Main Auditorium, Strandgade 71, ground floor, Christianshavn, 1401 Copenhagen K

Climate change is rarely the sole cause of conflict, but it can intensify and multiply existing conflicts over natural resources.

How should development cooperation address this challenge, and what are the experiences from past efforts at addressing conflict over natural resources at the local, national and transboundary levels?

These issues will be explored through presentations of experiences from East Africa, the Sahel and the Nile Basin by three prominent international speakers, Kennedy Mkutu, Marie Monimart and Ana Cascao, who will discuss root causes of conflicts and efforts to address them in relation to pastoral conflicts in Kenya, ‘Peace Wells’ in Niger, and transboundary water management in the Nile basin.

The seminar will furthermore present the main findings from a DIIS study commissioned by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the experiences from natural resource management in conflict prevention and resolution, and how development cooperation can help address the conflict multiplier effect of climate change.

The aim of the seminar is to inspire practitioners and researchers working on climate-related conflicts in the developing countries on how to address climate-related conflicts in development cooperation.
