After gaining independence from Britain in 1947, India’s foreign policy was based on a principle of non-alignment from the two super-power blocks.

In reality, however, throughout the Cold War, as a leader of the emerging post-Colonial nations, it found itself much closer to the Soviet Union than the US. The foreign policy was matched by a domestic economic policy that was a mixture of socialism and capitalism.

Immediately after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a dramatic shift began in the domestic policy away from state capitalism to a market-oriented economy.

Although less dramatic, there has also been a noticeable shift in India’s so-called “independent” foreign policy from “non-alignment” to a growing “strategic alliance” with the United States.

However, even after two decades since the initiation of such changes there is no consensus within the country as to move forward.

In this talk, Subrata Ghoshroy will examine a few key areas that exemplify the current policy debates on the economy, national security, and foreign affairs. He will also discuss the ramifications of India’s growing alliance with the US for South Asia and beyond, especially focusing on the US-India nuclear cooperation agreement.
