In this public seminar Prof. Doug Miller will discuss the prospects for the achievement of a living wage in the global garment sector long viewed as a ‘sweatshop’ industry.

Using the case of Bangladesh – due to announce a new minimum wage for the Ready Made Garment sector – he will examine the technical complexities of achieving a living wage labour cost in a multi-buyer outsourced value chain and discuss various alternative modes of delivery.

Doug Miller is Emeritus Professor in Worker Rights in Fashion at the University of Northumbria. Between 2000 and 2008 he was Research Director at the International Textile Garment and Leather Workers’ Federation now merged into the global union IndustriALL.

Recently, he has been assisting IndustriALL with the compensation negotiations for the victims of the Tazreen and Rana Plaza industrial disasters.
