Responding to the Crisis in Syria
–Supporting Livelihoods, Mitigating Impacts, and Preserving Development Gains in the Region

As the crisis in Syria deepens, and moves towards the three-year mark, world leaders are trying to determine how to respond to the massive human cost in deaths and displacement and to the overall devastation of Syrian social fabric. Whilst the socio-economic costs of the crisis within Syria are increasingly documented, much less is known about its implications for medium/long-term development prospects in the neighboring countries of Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.

However, the massive flows of refugees is reportedly affecting economic and social fabrics in host communities/areas, especially poor and more vulnerable communities, placing increased pressures on the delivery of basic services and infrastructures, labor markets, prices and incomes, in some instances also leading to social tensions.

UNDP along with other development partners have embarked on a number of assessments that will determine the impact of the crisis in Syria and neighboring countries, which will inform the development of a joint response and the roadmap ahead.

A seminar will be held with Sima Bahous, Assistant UN Secretary-General and UNDP Regional Director for Arab States. She will present the efforts of UNDP and the UN to respond to the development and humanitarian challenges in Syria, its neighbors, and the Arab World. Jens-Otto Horslund, Head of the MENA Department at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs will follow with a short intervention on Danish assistance in response to the Syrian crisis.
