The Rise of a Sino-centric Self-understanding?
China’s Identity and Great Power Role in the 21st Century

More than three decades of staggering economic growth has provided China with a growing capacity to shape international politics; yet it is still far from obvious what sort of great power role China wants to play.

While much of the current debate on the rise China revolves around the simplistic question of whether China will turn out to be a status quo-seeking or a revisionist great power, there has been little focus on the underlying discursive identity structures from which China constructs its vision of itself and the outside world.

So far, the Communist leadership has stressed the inclusive, peaceful and globalist aspects of Chinese identity, but as China’s history spans a uniquely deep and rich civilizational heritage as well as a relatively recent “century of humiliation”, there is ample discursive material to frame China’s self-understanding in a far more particularistic manner.

This seminar turns the spotlight on China’s on-going identity constitution, including its more particularistic, Sino-centric tendencies, in order to discuss the way Chinese identity may shape its great power role in the coming years.

This seminar is part of a DIIS seminar-series, which focuses on the identity, security and foreign policy aspirations of the rising BRIC-states.
