The right to education was enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, and reaffirmed in a range of subsequent instruments, for example the Convention on the Rights of the Child of 1989.

Nevertheless, millions of children around the world never have access to school, or drop out after a short period of attendance. Furthermore, governments often interpret the right in a minimalist fashion, without due attention to the quality of education and respect for learners.

This lecture argues for the unity of the right to education with rights within and through education.

Drawing on the experiences of as well as innovative examples of rights respecting schools – it presents an alternative vision of education for all underpinned by a human rights framework.

The seminar will be held in English.
