The New Private Frontiers of Development: Foundations, Philanthropy and Global Power

Contemporary development cooperation is characterized by a growing diversity of actors all eager to make a difference for the world’s poor. Among the most powerful of these are private philanthropic foundations.

While foundations have been important players in international development since the nineteenth century, they have gained renewed influence over development policy over the last ten years.

This is perhaps most cogently illustrated by the rise of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, now one of the most powerful players in global health and development.

Private foundations have largely been lauded for their financial contributions to development and for their alternative policy ideas. But who are these private foundations, what drives them and how are they governed?

What impact are they having on international development cooperation, both in terms of beneficiaries on the ground and in their relationships with other donor organizations? How is their increasing global power manifested, and where?

This seminar will explore these questions and address the growing role of private foundations in development cooperation. After the seminar, Michael Moran will launch his new book Private Foundations and Development Partnerships: American Philanthropy and Global Development Agendas (Routledge, 2014).
