Speaking from on-the-ground experience, editor-in-chief Lina Chawaf of the IMS-supported independent Syrian exile radio Rozana and Osama Al-Habahbeh, responsible for IMS’ work to support independent media in Iraq will address some of the questions and challenges facing journalists reporting from IS-captured areas in Syria and Iraq.

Is reporting from these areas too dangerous for local and international journalists and how will the recent brutal attacks on journalists affect the future of journalism in these areas?

Should journalists abandon their presence in the IS-captured areas knowing that this will mean that major news stories related to the lives of hundreds of thousands of Syrian, Kurd and Iraqi internally displaced people are not communicated to the outside world?

With a staff of more than 60 journalists working inside Syria, Lina Chawaf will share stories and daily deliberations related to reporting from IS-dominated areas, and discuss how Radio Rozana secures independent coverage.

Osama al-Habahbeh will address the current situation of independent Iraqi journalists operating in the conflict. Syria and Iraq remain the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. More than 60 journalists have been killed in Syria since 2012 and 18 in Iraq (CPJ) in the same period of time.

Presentations will be followed by a Q & A session moderated by Henrik Grunnet, Programme Manager for IMS’ work in Syria.
