Uranium Resources: Supply, Demand and Impact

Despite the postponement of mine development plans in a number of countries and the policy changes announced by a number of countries to reduce or eliminate nuclear power following the Fukushima Daiichi power plant accident, world nuclear capacity is projected to increase anywhere from 7% (low demand case) to upwards of 82% (high demand) by the year 2035.

Today’s known resources of uranium are able to fuel the world’s operating fleet of nuclear reactors at current consumption rates for at least a century and thus are more than adequate to meet the high case demand through 2025.

The challenge is to continue developing safe and environmentally responsible mining operations with timely investments given the long lead times required to turn resources into processed uranium ready for nuclear fuel production.

DIIS is pleased to welcome Robert Vance from the OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) to discuss trends in uranium supply, demand and impact.

His talk will focus on developments in global exploration, resources, production and reactor-related requirements described in the recently-released 25th Edition ‘Red Book’, a recognised world reference on uranium jointly prepared by the NEA and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Vance will also speak on another important NEA publication ‘Managing Environmental and Health Impacts of Uranium Mining’ which highlights the evolution of mining practices and how health and environmental impacts of uranium mines are managed and minimised today.
