Accountability in Action  – Webinar Series

In recent years, we have seen a growing debate in the development and humanitarian community at international as well as national levels about our own accountability to our constituencies and stakeholders – and first of all to the communities, we work with.

A key question has been how development and humanitarian organizations can ensure and improve accountability systematically in our organizational cultures – in our management and work processes and procedures.

Internationally and nationally, various (I)NGO networks have developed  codes of conducts and accountability schemes, some with external verification mechanisms.

Currently, the Steering Committee for Humanitarian Response (SCHR) is exploring the feasibility and relevance of certification for humanitarian organisations, in order to demonstrate compliance with humanitarian principles, quality and accountability standards – a project closely related to the efforts to develop a Core Humanitarian Standard lead by the Joint Standards Initiative )Humanitarian Accountability Partnership, Sphere project and People in Aid).

In 2014, the Humanitarian Committee of the Danish NGO Forum started a capacity building project, “Accountability in Action”, to develop and strengthen our own accountability through a number of workshops on accountability. This webinar series is part of this project.

The purpose is to complement the “Accountability in Action” workshops taking place in Copenhagen by making the topics presented in Copenhagen available through online presentations and discussions for those of our colleagues and other interested development and humanitarian workers who could not be present at the workshops.

The series will introduce the key principles in accountability to affected communities; discuss how these can be applied in different types of organizations; and provide a forum for discussion of the challenges and the potential impact of accountability to affected communities on the quality of programmes and projects.

The webinar series consist of the following 5 webinars:

IMPROVING IMPACT: DO ACCOUNTABILITY MECHANISMS DELIVER RESULTS?

In this webinar, we will discuss the impact of accountability on the quality of programmes and projects seen from the perspective of the communities we work with.

Beyond the moral responsibility to be accountable to the people we work with, is there evidence that accountable programming delivers projects that are more relevant, effective or sustainable? If so, what are the main practical elements of accountability that have an impact, and what are the factors that will reinforce or undermine the impact of accountability.

Presenter: David Loquercio, Head of Policy and External Relations, The HAP secretariat

20 NOV 10:30AM-12:00AM CET

MANAGEMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ACCOUNTABILITY COMMITMENTS
