The Libyan Revolution and its Aftermath: The Legacy of Armed Groups in the Peacebuilding Process

Armed groups played an important role in the Libyan 2011 revolution and its immediate aftermath, and they continue to do so in the current, challenging process of peacebuilding. The armed groups emerged from critical towns, such as Misrata, tribal communities such as Beni Walid, and political communities such as the Muslim Brotherhood. They each took their own path in the uprisings and the conflict according to their histories and relationship to Muammar Qadhafi’s regime.

Speakers

Brian McQuinn, a Guggenheim Foundation Dissertation Fellow, did fieldwork on armed groups in Libya during the revolution, and has completed a doctorate at the University of Oxford on the Libyan uprising. His research has appeared in the Financial Times, BBC World Service, Oxford University Press and Journal for Conflict Resolution, and with Peter Cole, he has edited the forthcoming book, The Libyan Revolution and its Aftermath (Hurst Publishers, 2014). Previously, he worked extensively on issues of conflict mediation for the United Nations and The Carter Center.
