Looking 30 years ahead

The UK Ministry of Defence in 2014 has published their fifth edition of Global Strategic Trends, which seeks to take a comprehensive view of the future in order not to predict the future but to describe plausible outcomes.

The edition looks 30 years ahead and uses trends to make it possible for the policy-makers to prepare the UK society for what tomorrow might bring.

The edition predict that demographic changes will see developed nations adapting to aging populations, while developing nations are challenged by a population growth that is not necessarily matched by an economic development.

Other predictions talk about uneven spread of technology and resources, growth of cities, environmental challenges, and individualism to inform policy-makers how their choices could have a great impact on the future as the trends themselves.

What are the challenges in a prediction of trends for the next 30 years and what should policy-makers have in mind when they seek to grapple such trends?
