Background

What will the world order be geopolitically in the next ten years? Will China and Russia form an alliance against the United States—the existing hegemon?

China and Russia have been getting more assertive in their respective regions. Russian involvement in the Ukraine crisis and China’s actions in the South China Sea and East China Sea maritime disputes have raised the level of international tensions of world politics.

Meanwhile, the United states has been pivoting to Asia clearly targeting China, vigorously pushing forward with NATO expansion, and promoting the establishment of TTIP and TPP in the economic sphere.

The economic sanctions against Russia after the Ukraine crisis have seemingly pushed Russia to move closer with China.

* But will this new “Beijing-Moscow Axis” last long enough to seriously challenge the United States?

* Will the United States leadership be able to strategically handle the challenges from a rising China in the context of high economic interdependence between the two nations?

* What should the United States do in order to deal with an aggressive Russia in Eurasia?

This workshop will look at the new dynamics in the triangular relationship between the United States, China, and Russia to offer insights on the strategic interactions between the three, and look for policy implications for the European Union.
