Innovation and development

What is innovation (nytænkning)? What does it take for innovation to be successful? And what role does innovation play in the future of development?

Innovation is increasingly embedded in global development and it has much to benefit from the new insights that innovation can offer.

An example of how innovation can be utilised include a data system where a laser, optical scanner or mobile app read bar codes and follow the distribution of medical equipment in developing countries. The innovative system can ensure that the goods do not go astray due to thefts or that counterfeit (forfalskede) products end up in the hospitals.

SO: How can we strengthen data-driven decision making to support attainment of the new sustainable development goals (agenda 2030)?

A data revolution is sweeping the globe with new technologies, skills and opportunities to connect official statistics, big data, citizen generated data, geospatial and earth observation data for public good.

Opening up of government and private sector data to improve policy-making, foster entrepreneurial innovation and empower citizens is further bolstering the data revolution.

Come and meet UNFPA’s Global Coordinator for Innovation and Data for Development, Bruce Campbell, and hear him explain how and why UNFPA is increasingly focusing on innovation and big data to improve the lives of girls and women.

Hear Bruce Campbell, who is visiting from UNFPA´s New York office, explain why innovation has proven so useful and successful.

Bruce Campbell joined UNFPA in 2000 and has spent most his life working to improve access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Services, HIV prevention, Gender Based Violence and ensuring that population dynamics are incorporated in overall development planning.

Today, he is the global coordinator of UNFPA’s Data for Development platform and sponsor of UNFPA’s innovation initiative.
