Bolivia is urging the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to write off part of the debt it and four central American countries owe the institution, BBC Online reports Tuesday.
Evo Morales, Bolivia left-wing president, is proposing that the bank eliminates some of the 3,5 billion US dollar (21,7 milliarder DKR) owed by Bolivia, Haiti, Honduras, Guyana and Nicaragua.
But two of the key countries in Latin America, Brazil and Mexico, have reservations about the relief proposal. The IDBs annual meeting, a key event in the region, is being held in Brazil.
Brazils planning minister Paulo Bernando said Bolivias plans needed much closer scrutiny. Though Mexico supports the debt relief package, it does not want to be responsible for paying for it, said Mexicos finance minister Francisco Gil.
Bolivia owes the majority – 48 per cent – of the total debt to the IDB, reports Brazils governmental newswire.
