In Focus: While vacationing in Thailand, we forgot to pay attention

After 9 weeks of anti-government rallies by the “red-shirt” protesters in Bangkok and failed peace-talks, violence broke out as the army was moved in to end the rallies, which resulted in burned-down buildings, destruction and dozens of deaths.

Bangkok was put under emergency rule and while thousands of red-shirts returned to their homes a national curfew was installed to prevent renewed protests.

In this week’s In Focus blog on the AsiaPortal Anya Palm, freelance journalist based in Bangkok, laments the development of what four years ago was seen as a role model of democracy for other Southeast Asian countries.

In the In Focus section of the AsiaPortal we address an up-to-date topic and ask a Nordic expert in this area to write a short opinion in an attached blog. We warmly welcome researchers, students, experts and others interested in the topic to give their comments in the blog.

We would also like to form a network of people who would be interested in participating with opinions in future In Focus themes. Anyone interested can contact us on [email protected]
