Algeria after the Arab Revolts: Contention, Security, and Anti-terrorism

Almost three years after the Arab Revolts began in North Africa, regional and international actors increasingly look to Algeria as a key player in stabilizing the region.

Pointing to Algeria’s proven ability to combat Islamist rebellion during the “civil war” in the 1990s, and to its vast resources of oil and natural gas, regional and international actors and observers have recently urged the regime in Algiers to assume a role as a great power in North Africa and the Sahel.

While Algeria’s North African neighbours in Libya, Tunisia and Egypt are preoccupied with convoluted post-revolt political transitions, several governments in the Sahel region have encouraged Algeria to take a lead in assuring regional security and combating Islamist rebels. Hence the situation in the wake of the Arab revolts provides opportunities for Algiers to increase its weight in regional politics.

Doing so, however, requires that the regime proves capable of containing the challenges that it faces internally including a rise in socio-economic protest, continued low-scale terrorism and widespread political disengagement.

The seminar “Algeria after the Arab Revolts” discusses whether and how Algeria may be able and willing to assume an increased role as regional great power in the Maghreb and the Sahel regions in the wake of the Arab Revolts by scrutinizing three key factors: counter-terrorism policies, contentious politics, and regional security.

The seminar forms part of a broader research project on contemporary Algeria launched by the Danish Institute for International Studies in collaboration with SciencesPO (Paris).
