‘Fortress Europe’ and the Migrant Deaths on the Mediterranean

The number of migrant deaths attributed to the dangerous journey from North Africa to Southern Europe is now estimated to have reached 2,000 this summer in what Pope Francis recently called a ‘massacre’.

This DIIS Migration Seminar discusses recent tragic events in North Africa and Southern Europe and how they reflect larger developments related to the expansion and strengthening of EU borders in a time of crisis.

Based on ethnographic insights it focuses on the desperate choices people make and how, justified by the fear of an ‘African invasion’, various actors – official and unofficial – have made it their business to stop them from reaching Europe; in the process putting lives at risk.

In this complex economy new harsh social and political realities are created in the EU-African borderlands.

Speakers

  • Henrik Vigh, Professor, Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen
  • Ruben Andersson, Postdoctoral Researcher, London School of Economics and Political Science
  • Hans Lucht, Senior Researcher, DIIS

The seminar will be in English.
