Priorities for the New EU Leadership: What to Expect and What to Wish?

With the European Commission headed by President Jean-Claude Juncker taking office on November 1st, a new EU political cycle (2014-2019) will begin in earnest.

Against the background of a persisting negative economic juncture, of brewing instability at Europe’s Southern and Eastern borders, and of a European Parliament election that registered a record-low turnout and a record-high result for Eurosceptic parties, the Union and its member states are confronted with a diverse set of challenges on multiple levels.

The institutional architecture that emerged from the 2009 Lisbon Treaty, as well as the mechanisms devised during the Euro-crisis, have equipped the EU with new tools aimed at better preparing the Union. It is up to the EU’s new leadership to test whether these tools are sufficient and appropriate.

To discuss the priorities of the new EU leadership, DIIS is pleased to host a presentation of a new collective publication by the European Policy Centre in Brussels, entitled Challenges and new beginnings: Priorities for the EU’s new leadership, whose findings will then be contextualized in relation to Denmark’s own EU priorities.

Speakers

  • Rosa Balfour, Director of Europe in the World, European Policy Centre, Brussels
  • Eva Kjer Hansen, Member of Parliament and chairperson of the European Affairs Committee, Folketinget
  • Fabrizio Tassinari, Senior Researcher, DIIS
