Ester Boserup Prize 2024

The Ester Boserup Prize for Research on Development 2024 will be awarded to Michael J. Watts, Professor Emeritus of Geography at the University of California, Berkeley.
Michael J. Watts will give an open lecture titled: “A Tale of Two Women Economists: Ester Boserup, Polly Hill, and the study of Agrarian Systems”.

Michael J. Watts’ first book, Silent Violence: Food, Famine and Peasantry in Northern Nigeria (1983, 2013), is considered a pioneering work in political ecology. Other published works include Reworking Modernity: Capitalisms and Symbolic Discontent (1992, with Allan Pred), Liberation Ecologies (1996, 2004, with Richard Peet), The Hettner Lectures: Geographies of Violence (2000), Violent Environments (2001, with Nancy Peluso) and the Curse of the Black Gold (2008, with photojournalist Ed Kashi).

The Ester Boserup Thesis Prize 2024 will be awarded to David Singh, PhD.
David Singh will give an open lecture titled: “Winds of Change”.

David Singh defended his PhD thesis at the University of East Anglia and the University of Copenhagen in 2023: Winds of Change in a ‘Saffronised’ Indian Borderland: Dispossession and Power in Rural Kutch.
