Background – dangerous ground

Denmark has recently decided to deploy special troops and a Hercules military transport aircraft to the MINUSMA operation in Mali.

The new mission represents a significant upscaling of the Danish contribution to UN’s anti-terrorism and stabilization mission in the Sahel.

In this DIIS seminar we explore how the instability of the Sahel and the Maghreb regions have become interconnected in the wake of the fall of Libya’s long-term dictator colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

How the 2011 NATO bombardment of Libya that effectively removed colonel Gaddafi, and the ensuing civil war in Libya, have changed regional political and security dynamics and affected the neighbouring countries in the Maghreb and in the Sahel and in particular Mali.

From this vantage point we discuss the MINUSMA, UN’s currently most dangerous mission, and the French and Danish military engagement in the ongoing struggle with militant jihadists, weapons proliferation, drug and human smuggling in the Sahel and in the Maghreb.
