Quality Education – survey, summing up and debate

After-work Meetings: Quality Education in critical conversation Quality Education development in a Mongolian context Community mobilization and participation as part of quality education

In the first half of 2014 the Education Network conducted, a questionnaire survey among member organizations working with quality education and development in their projects. Among many of the survey statements there are two that stick out, namely 1) that there is a strong focus on teachers’ competence and 2) cooperation between schools and communities.

A working group (consisting of: Else Østergaard, the Education Network Coordinator, Catherine Watson, Axis and Johnny Baltzersen, CICED) reviewed the responses from the Education Network survey, and is now taking steps to make it possible that organizations in the Network discuss experiences and ideas for working with quality education with focus on teachers’ capacity and school-community collaboration.

The after- work meetings will take place:

Wednesday August 27 at 16:30 to 18:30 Tuesday September 16 at 16:30 to 18:30 Tuesday September 30th at 16:30 to 18:30

All meetings are held at IBIS, Vesterbrogade 2B

The first meeting (August 27) is held under the heading Quality Education in critical conversation. At that meeting, Catherine Watson, Axis will share experiences about teachers’ professional development in education projects in Peru and Bolivia. Participants will be involved in a structured discussion of issues related to Axis’ experience and will be encouraged to share their own project experience in the field of quality education and teachers capacity building.

The second meeting (September 16) is held under the heading Quality Education Development in a Mongolian context, with presentations by Johnny Baltzersen, CICED.

Johnny has worked with development of education in Mongolia since 1992. From 2000 to 2010 the programme focused on teachers’ competence and school-community collaboration in 80 schools in the Mongolian countryside.

Using a special Mongolian form of action learning and strengthening of cooperation between school and community the programme managed to significantly raise the quality of education in the 80 schools.

The special Mongolian form of action learning is today a key strategy in the Mongolian Ministry of Education to work with the teachers’ professional development.

The third meeting (September 30) is held under the heading Community mobilization and participation as part of quality education.

Catherine Kennedy from Save the Children will introduce Save the Children’s attempt to prioritize parents and community mobilization to create a conducive learning environment for children and young people.

She will present Save the Children’s model: ‘Literacy Boost ‘; focusing on the component relating to Community Action, and discuss how it can be part of efforts to strengthen the quality of education programmes.
