Based on interviews with 23 firms in Jiangsu Province between 2012-2015, this seminar analyses the complex impacts of renminbi appreciation. We argue that a global value chain framework is the most useful for understanding this complexity. We analyze the responses of firms in terms of technical and political responses, and the responses of both firms and governments in the form of ‘upgrading’. We conclude with some more speculative comments about the medium term impacts of appreciation, and other factors such as rising labour costs on the ability of firms based in China to remain competitive.
