Why all those different developments?

How do we explain the different developments that the Arab Spring countries have gone through since 2011?

In his talk, professor Daniel Brumberg offers a comparative analysis of the dynamics of the revolts by exploring the internal mechanics of authoritarian rule in the Middle East and North Africa.

By focusing on the “protection racket” systems that helped sustain authoritarianism in North Africa and the Middle East, Brumberg highlights how the distinct legacies of protection racket politics in Tunisia and Egypt structured very different trajectories of (veje mod) change and created distinct challenges when it came to reconfiguring (omdanne) political systems after the revolts.

He also demonstrates how these trajectories of change have had profound consequences, both for the nature of rule in Arab states, and for their capacity to maintain internal and regional security.
