China, Peacebuilding, and Post-conflict Reconstruction in Africa

After a decade of dramatic growth in trade and investment with Africa, China now plays a prominent role in African economics, politics, and foreign relations.

But similar to other outside actors, China has also become embroiled in Africa’s conflicts. As a consequence, Beijing has increased its engagement in conflict resolution, peacekeeping, peacebuilding, and post-conflict reconstruction on the continent. China is no longer just promoting economic interests, but also seeking ways to promote peace and stability, partly to protect its economic interests.

This seminar brings together both researchers and practitioners to examine China’s role in peace and security in Africa. It will cover China’s activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Sudan, South Sudan, and how Western governments and non-governmental organizations are engaging Chinese actors. Its aim is to explore the challenges and opportunities of China’s growing participation in peace and security issues in Africa.

The seminar is part of a DIIS series on ‘Global China and New Security Challenges’. It provides a platform to disseminate international research in Denmark on the impact of China on issues intersecting international security, politics, and economics.
