The Sino-Indian relations have become an inclusive phenomenon. As the global economic integration deepens and the economies of both China and India develop rapidly, new conditions are being created for reshaping Sino-Indian relations.

Though there are a series of impediments restricting the depth and extent to which they can cooperate, potential opportunities have been created to reshape the bilateral relationship.

Three scenarios could dominate the prospects of Sino-Indian relations in coming times.

First, both India and China will remain isolated from each other, and a ‘zero-sum competitive’ relationship will exist between the two. Both would prefer to compete with each other as they grow stronger, and this competition would be reflected from the Indian Ocean to the neighboring areas of Central Asia, South-East Asia, and South Asia.

The second emerging scenario is the establishment of full fledged bilateral free trade area and the formation of an overall strategic alliance between the two countries at the global level. Though this remains an unrealistic scenario, given the underlying obstacles between China and India, still both would like to consider that and try to accommodate each other’s interests in the overall design of Rising Asia.

IIn that context, the club of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) is an opportunity. Third, China-India relations will temporarily move towards mutual propensity, but the relationship between the two will restrict to ‘being good neighbours’ only.
