Background

It is cliché to say that China is complex.

However, the recent market volatility shows that we are dealing with an increasingly complex and more globally impactful China.  It is not just one China. Neither “China collapse” nor “China miracle” alone.

The presentation will discuss how we are dealing with a China that is simultaneously vulnerable in some important ways, and powerful, bold and ambitious.

How, for the next phase, we are dealing with a different China than for the past 3 decades, when the path of evolution seemed relatively clear and predictable.

We are dealing with a China that has become more of a global actor, with global interests, and in the process of learning how to manage its global influence – while we also face a United States and Europe that are in transition.

We are dealing with a China that is looking to enact bold changes, but where the future outcomes of the reform process are less certain, less predictable – a China that is trying to carve out its own path.

From a global perspective, this adds to the growing uncertainty world-wide. It also raises the bar on the analysis of China and the world.
