Militæret og præsidenten – en aggressiv mix

Veteran Sinologist Willy Lam, who has just published Chinese Politics in the Era of Xi Jinping (Routledge, 2015), will talk about China’s diplomacy –including the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) increasing clout in the country’s national security-related policy-making.

Focus will be put on President Xi Jinping’s aggressive global power projection under the nationalistic “Chinese dream” mantra.

The key to Beijing’s game plan is to offer China’s neighbors economic inducements which range from trading opportunities to infrastructure-related loans regarding the “One Belt, One Road” gambit.

Moreover, the Xi administration is relentlessly modernizing the military arsenal and flexing China’s muscle in the East China Sea and the South China Sea with the eventual goal of displacing the United States as the ultimate arbiter of the Asia-Pacific region.

Lam will analyze the ways in which senior military figures have influenced Xi’s policies particularly regarding the U.S., Japan and the South China Sea.

He will also assess how the preponderance of the generals will affect not only Chinese diplomacy but also the country’s overall modernization objectives.
