Background

At the occasion of the visit of the Malian Foreign Minister, Mr. Diop, to Denmark, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kristian Jensen, in collaboration with the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) invites you to a discussion on “The conflict in Mali and the broader regional dynamics”.

Increased migration pressure on Europe and the persistence in terrorist activity in the Sahel have demonstrated the continuously strong and broader regional implications of the collapse of Libya and the continued limited security and state presence in Northern Mali.

At the same time the last nine months have been marked by significant new opportunities including the signing of a peace agreement in Mali as well as promising regional cooperation in the Sahel mainly through the G5 Sahel.

The situation in Mali and the Sahel shows that a regional, coherent and comprehensive approach is more pertinent than ever for the stabilisation of the Sahel-region. Thus the approach must address security, migration as well as development issues with priority.

Denmark has a broad and comprehensive engagement in Mali including diplomatic engagement to push for a political solution to the crisis, long term development cooperation, military and civilian contributions to MINUSMA, regional stabilisation programme and humanitarian assistance.

The Danish government has just launched a new strategic framework for the cooperation between Mali and Denmark the coming five years.
