Background
After years of being regarded primarily as a development problem, the issue of corruption is increasingly understood in terms of security. In different ways, most current conflicts can be seen as responses to systematic corruption and the personal enrichment of ruling elites.
This goes for the spread of the Islamic State, the endurance of Boko Haram in Nigeria, the East-West standoff in Ukraine to the Arab Spring and Taliban’s retaking of Afghanistan.
This seminar discusses the multiple linkages between corrupt and abusive governance and threats to global and international security including the rise of militant extremism and organized crime.
The seminar features bestselling author of Thieves of States, Sarah Chayes from Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Focusing on the structured nature of corruption, she will outline how systematic corruption is driving major world events in these years, and thus forcing us to rethink the Western understanding of both what corruption ‘is’ and how it should be countered.
Sarah Chayes is visiting Denmark upon invitation from co-organiser Transparency International Denmark.
