Save the Children Denmark has the pleasure to invite international and national staff, managers, delegates and other practitioners working for organizations with a focus on children in crisis to participate in a 2-day training event on Psychological First Aid for Child Practitioners in Copenhagen, Denmark, December 3-4, 2014.

Save the Children’s Psychological First Aid (PFA) is a set of essential skills, recommended by the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) and the Sphere Project, and acknowledged in the Minimum Standards of Child Protection in Humanitarian Action. Currently, the PFA training is being used in more than 15 countries under guidance of Save The Children.

What is the Psychological First Aid Training for Child Practitioners?

Psychological First Aid to Children is a defined set of skills and competencies that any staff working with children in crisis should have, to be able to reduce the initial distress of children caused by accidents, natural disasters, conflicts or other critical incidents.

The PFA training includes:

  • Tools on communication, reassurance and comforting for staff working directly with distressed children.
  • Advice and guidance for staff working with parents and primary caregivers. It includes techniques of how to empower an adult to support a distressed child.
  • Stress reduction and coping tools for staff and caregivers.

Who can deliver Psychological First Aid?

Psychological First Aid for Children is for anyone working with children in distress, particularly volunteers, aid workers, and other international and national staff. The tool is relevant for colleagues across thematic working sectors, and not limited to those working on child protection or psychosocial programming.

The training can host up to 25 participants. Should there be too many interested participants, we will have to make a selection based on relevance for the training and diversity of participating organizations. However, in that case we will try to offer a second training in the first half of 2015.

Please contact Anne-Sophie Dybdal ([email protected]) or Kai Yamaguchi-Fasting ([email protected]) for interest or possible questions.
