Death and dead bodies can have extremely forceful, affective, and potentially disruptive effects, not only for individuals, but also for political authority.

BACKGROUND

In a recent anthology, Governing the Dead. Sovereignty and the Politics of Dead Bodies, Finn Stepputat, Senior Researcher, DIIS, argues that attempts to control or channel what we may call the ‘powers of death’ are closely associated with claims to sovereignty by states and other kinds of political and moral communities (such as religious, ethnic, and local communities, gangs or brotherhoods).

Through laws and procedures, authorities seek to contain the effects of dead bodies in everyday life, while famous and exceptional dead bodies may find themselves at the center of political spectacles or heated controversies – think of political figures such as Lenin, Che Guevara, Bin Laden, Gadaffi, Mandela and Marcos.

The seminar presents the main ideas and some cases from the anthology, while invited speakers will discuss which perspectives the anthology opens up for future research. The seminar will be followed by a reception.
