From the First Gulf War through the wars in the Balkans, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya, the world’s cultural heritage has suffered enormous destruction. Syria presents us with another catastrophic case.

The loss of the world’s cultural heritage is irremediable and impoverishes not only the directly affected nation or community, but humankind as such.

While international conventions have been enacted under the auspice of UNESCO and major destruction of cultural heritage is widely condemned when it occurs, in reality most states have taken few steps to effectively protect cultural property during armed conflict.

This seminar presents political, legal and military perspectives on the problem of cultural heritage protection in wartime context from leading and influential figures in the field.

It discusses drivers of destruction and looting, developments in international law, shortcomings of the international responses and possible ways to improve the protection of the world’s cultural heritage during war and post-conflict situations.

The seminar is arranged in cooperation with The Centre for International Law and Justice at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen.
