Background

The seemingly secular international order which dominated the 20th century has been impacted in recent decades by the rise of political Islam in many different varieties, from the Iranian Revolution to Turkey’s AK Party to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

Moreover a strengthening Evangelical movement in the United States and much of the developing world, and Orthodox churches revitalized after the collapse of the Soviet communist empire appear to exert an increasing influence on foreign policy.

The seminar asks how religion and a wide variety of religious actors impact and influence politics and foreign policy in North America, Europe, and Europe’s neighborhood.

The seminar will ask questions such as

  • What are the foreign policy implications of religious differences between a more secular Europe and a more Christian United States?
  • What is the role of religion in the foreign policy of President Vladimir Putin’s Russia, and in President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s transformation of Turkey?
  • How effective are Western policies in promoting religious freedom and how can liberal societies best manage religion and religious actors?
  • Does Islamism challenge the liberal order and how secular is the liberal order really?
