The Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict takes place in London from 10-13 June 2014, co-hosted by the British Foreign Secretary and Angelina Jolie, the Special Envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Denmark has been an active participant as one of thirteen international Champions for the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI).

This event is your opportunity to hear views on the prospects for the Global Summit and provide your input directly to London on the first day of the Summit.

Background

Sexual violence continues to be used as a weapon of war in many countries today. Often, sexual violence is perceived as an inevitable consequence of the breakdown of law and order, rather than as a strategic weapon.

It is seen as a ‘lesser crime’, creating a culture of impunity. Injustices often go unpunished and the stigma rests with the victims.

They and their surrounding communities suffer the long-term consequences, putting at risk their physical and psycho-social well-being and their full participation in society.

Member States of the United Nations and the UN development organisations are committed to address this issue at all levels. In late 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted a Declaration of Commitment to End Sexual Violence in Conflict.

Building on this, the Global Summit in London is the largest gathering ever brought together on the subject, with a view to creating irreversible momentum against sexual violence in conflict and practical action that impacts those on the ground.
