“Syria, the Central African Republic and South Sudan: Current Challenges and Opportunities for the Responsibility to Protect” A public lecture and discussion with Dr. Simon Adams, Global Centre for R2P

Almost three years of devastating conflict in Syria, and rapidly deteriorated situations in the Central African Republic and South Sudan present the international community with an array of challenges and opportunities for applying the global norm of R2P.

Once seen as important lesson learnt from the Rwandan genocide, Srebrenica and the controversies surrounding NATO’s intervention in Kosovo, R2P today is facing tough questions. Can R2P realize the promise of “never again” and what does that
take?

Dr. Simon Adams will reflect on how to respond to multiple crises with equal resolve to prevent mass atrocity crimes and deepen commitment to R2P.

Simon Adams is Executive Director of the Global Centre for R2P. He has worked extensively with governments and civil society organizations in South Africa, East Timor, Rwanda, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and elsewhere. Dr. Adams is the author of four books and has written for the New York Times, Chicago Tribune and the Huffington Post.
