Background

Somalia is one of the world’s most fragile countries. Since the establishment of the Federal Government of Somalia in September 2012, Somalia has worked intensively to build the foundation for a modern and democratic state.

The coming months in Somalia are crucial ahead of the planned national elections in 2016. At the same time, Somalia is facing a number of challenges including inter-clan disputes and frequent terror attacks from radical groups.

These challenges also affect the ability of the international community to implement programs in the country.

The Danish engagement in Somalia covers the full range of activities from political dialogue, stabilisation and development to humanitarian assistance.

The Somalia engagement is thus an illustrative example of the Danish comprehensive approach to fragile states based on a coherent and coordinated mobilisation of several and diverse foreign policy instruments.

The new country policy paper for Denmark’s engagement in Somalia 2015-2017 can be downloaded from the link at the bottom of the text.

The Danish version is also available at the similar Danish site.

“Somalia – the road to peace and stability” is a public meeting jointly organised by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and DIIS, Danish Institute for International Studies.

The focus will be on the political and security challenges that Somalia faces and how Denmark can best support Somalia’s peaceful transition before and after the elections in 2016.
