Background

Tananias´s major opposition parties have formed an alliance, UKAWA, to topple the ruling party, CCM.

They have agreed to field only one presidential candidate, Edward Lowassa (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Lowassa), and one candidate for the parliament in each constituency. This will enhance their chances of a successful election outcome.

CCM has chosen the respected, but less known technocrat, John Magufuli (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Magufuli), as their candidate. Both presidential candidates are campaigning for change.

But Tanzania is already changing rapidly. Despite some setbacks the election campaigns testify to the fact that the country has a vibrant public debate.

The participation through social media is unprecedented. Furthermore, the country experiences annual growth rates of around seven per cent.

It is the country in East Africa attracting most foreign direct investments and poverty rates have finally started falling.

Will change, then, be for the better or for the worse?

Do the close elections affect political stability?

How does Zanzibar, long the more volatile part of the Union, come out?

The seminar will look at trends and major topics during and after the elections.
